Eress Forum 2017

This year we celebrated our 10th anniversary at the UIC headquarters in Paris on May 31st. 120 representatives from 14 countries in Europe met at Eress Forum, our annual conference, to network, discuss and share news, experiences and knowledge related to railways and energy.

The EU Commission (DG Move) and the European Agency for Railways (ERA) confirmed that the European standard describing the specific requirements for onboard energy meter systems (EN 50463: 2017) is now accepted by all national committees and becomes mandatory from 1 January next year. This means that by 2020, all EU Member States must have a data collection system that can collect data from energy meters on board and also a settlement system that can exchange, validate and allocate energy data coming from meters.

Other highlights of the Eress forum were the results of the "Energy Metering Survey in Europe", a collaboration between the Eress and the Sustainable Foundation and the first version of the "Conformity Assessment Guidelines", a publication describing the logical steps to be taken to get approved measuring equipment on rolling stock.

Eress Award
Eress award, a prize promoting new ideas from students in railway energy efficiency, was given to Evamarie Wiessner (University of Dresden), for her dissertation "Optimizing trajectories of trains runs for effective energy consumption using a traction and speed-dependent engine efficiency level".

New partnership model
During the Eress Forum, we launched a new model that will simplify the entry of new partners in the coming years. We aim for international standardization and will have our own data collection system already in 2018.

We are proud to have come a long way with the Eress and Erex system, but we want to work even closer together throughout Europe. Eress Forum is reference point where energy rail Europe gathers every year to learn about the latest developments in the industry. For us, this is both challenging and exciting. As we learn to adapt to the new political and technological challenges ahead, we need also to show the way forward.
